Striving for success

Jarred Mann came to Software Development to turn a spreadsheet into a commercially viable program that could be sold using a system he had designed for Pair Trading.  Jarred had tried several commercial software packages on the market but couldn’t find anything that suited his needs.

The data entry system for use in vehicle / helicopter is designed to be operated by touch screen making it extremely easy for an operator to record faults. The system automatically knows where the current fault is based on GPS locations and matches it up to clients data for integration into such systems as SAP. Software Development Pty Ltd contracted to Imaje Coding Systems to develop a system handled by Dematic for Toll in2Store / Colorado print and apply system.

The software handles the integration between the Toll warehouse management software and the printers on the warehouse floor.

Following is a summary of features

• Receives data from Warehouse Management System
• Stores in a SQL Server Database / Creates Corresponding Job
• Barcode scanners along the conveyors trigger the system to queue a new job
• New Job retrieves data for the label to be printed
• The carton (package) is analysed by an ultrasonic sensor to calculate the height via a matrix table
• The software times the print and apply process to match the carton height and applies the label
• Updates the corresponding data during the process for statistical tracking
• Many other automation features such as PLC integration, conveyor monitoring etc are also in the software
• The software is capable of handling up to 16 printers per workstation, with the ability to add as many workstations as requires over a WAN,LAN , Intranet or Internet.

SOI Manager

SOI Manager is being nominated for an award by SunROC/Cooloola Regional Road Group.

INTRODUCTION

This submission for a 2005 Roads Alliance Award, in the category of Leadership Excellence, presents a simple database program “SOI MANAGER” as a tool to define and record all details of the development investment strategy for Local Roads of Regional Significance (LRRS) in the SunROC/Cooloola Regional Road Group (RRG).

The RRG recognised the need for consistency in the approach to development of the investment strategy by each of the Members in the group. As a result an experienced independent engineer was engaged as an additional resource within the group, to contribute to development of the investment strategy and review its consistency and accuracy.

The name “SOI MANAGER” reflects the development of the overall Statement of Intent (SOI) for each road and the simplicity for management and documentation of all the components that go into development of the investment strategy for the LRRS.

In discussing the requirements to develop the strategy it was recognised immediately that the development of this process was not only a requirement of the Roads Alliance framework but it could also assist the individual Members in refinement of their existing internal programs and processes to prioritise their works programs.

As this simple tool can be used by the individual Members of the SunROC/Cooloola RRG it could also be relatively easily transported to other RRG’s, if there is a further need to provide a transparent but simple tool that fully records the important aspects of development and annual maintenance of their investment strategies.

The work was initiated in October 2004 and the costing model to assess the scope of work of each project has only recently been completed. The completion of this phase of the project has been enthusiastically welcomed by Members of the RRG as being to the desired standard for ease of operation, accuracy and transparency in the recording of input data.
